My Son's Allergy Update

So much has been going on since my last post that I really haven't had much of a chance to update you on our son's allergies.  In September we went back to see his allergist and we had a new round of testing done.  It was a good and I wouldn't really say bad but, not so good result.  First off if you have read my beginning posts to this blog you know what we suffered from to begin with.  For those of you who don't he is allergic to milk, peanuts and eggs.  Well this round of testing was to find out if those numbers have went down and to find out what environmental things he is allergic too.  We have a great news on the numbers the milk and egg numbers have dropped, so this coming Monday starting at 8:20 am we have the first of 2 food challenges.  We are starting with the milk and will be at the clinic for at least four hours, more if he has a reaction.  The peanut however (or nut) allergy is still pretty high, while the peanut itself has come down the, brazil, hazel, pecan, and walnut remain very high.  Thus keeping us away from nuts all together.  Now on to the environmental side of things, we now have and asthma inhaler, he was not diagnosed with asthma at this time, it is a precaution.  The reason for the precaution was because of wheezing episodes he had been having.  His doctor wanted us to have the means to stop the episode before it got our of hand.  She does think some where down the line he will have full blown asthma, we are hoping not.  She believes he like so many other children with food allergies is growing into the asthma.  Kinda of like not having a single allergy as a kid but as an adult you get the onset of them all, concept.  So wish us luck on Monday that he passes with flying colors, and he can start having milk, cheese, ice cream and other dairy items he keeps begging us for.  Will try to post an update as soon as I can after the challenge.

On a side note I was sidelined for about a month after the last post due to our oldest son spilling a drink on our laptop.  He was in the dog house and grounded for it, it fried the whole thing I ended up having to buy a new laptop, and only the hard drive was saved from the old one.  He is now in debt as a 10 year old to pay the saving of the hard drive bill off and the cost of a new computer.  You might think that is harsh but when you have told them not to have a drink next to computer or make their drink next to it the penalty fits the crime!

New School Year

This week marked a new school year for us, do you ever notice how the first week is just pure chaos???  That's exactly how this week was and then some.  Thinking about green was not an option for me at all the only green I was concerned with was the money that apparently has to fly out the door at the beginning of every year.  Trying to get in the ever so daunting routine has been a challenge as well, so working on my tabs here had to be put on hold.  For me the next few weeks will be like zombie-ville as my summer job comes to an end, and my winter job gets back into full swing, the 2 overlap and sleep is a far from here thing for me.  Naps will be my best friend in the world for these lovely weeks.  But when you are also paying off debt that comes first!  What do you do for your kids to be green at school?????  Love to hear the comments for this, maybe we can share things some of us didn't think of!

New Icons In Side Bars

Some of you may have noticed some new buttons in my side bars.  I have been having fun looking at other blogs lately and have found some new buttons to add here.  I also am working on adding a menu bar at the top of the page which will eventually have some of the things listed in the side bar in those areas instead of piling up on the main blog page.  I hope you all will like my changes, I am trying to make for some better navigation, especially to  products, community's, other blogs, and helpful information.  As we all know blogs are a work in progress and I hope my progress just keeps getting better for my readers.

A VBS of Renewable Possibilities

My boys are going to a local church vacation bible school this week, and the theme is "Renew".  It's all about renewing and preserving our great planet.  Last night they planted seeds, and learned about being a "sower".
This is coming from my 9 year old about what the sower does.  The sower plants the seeds of God to live off of the earth.  Things that people do to our planet keep the seeds from growing.  This coming from my 9 year old on what they did I know only sums up part of it, but you know how they are with trying to explain what they do when they are not with you.  They usually have a sheet they bring home as to what they do, but he said Grandma got it and they went out the back door, my answer to that is make sure you pick one up too.  I would like to see what they do and report here to you all.

Last Nights Fun Kudos To My Friend Jennie

Last night I attended a Pampered Chef Party hosted by a wonderful lady.  I was pleased when it was a spa party but was really floored when they did the show as a "Natural Pamper".  To demonstrate the products that Pampered Chef has they used all edible treats for facials.  She mixed everything up in their products and we gave ourselves facials.  It all started off with a oat meal cleanser, next was a watermelon/witch hazel ex-foliate, then came the lemon juice/sugar scrub, and lastly an egg yolk/honey mask complete with cucumbers for the eye.  This was a wonderful idea and it comes from the earth.
The consultant took the time to search the internet for natural ingredients for beauty.  It's amazing what one can find with a Google search.  She said she found numerous things from natural sources you could use for beautifying ones self.

Did you know GOD is the ultimate environmentalist???

Recently I had to buy a bible for my son who is attending church camp for the first time.  While we searched through the shelves at Borders Book Store I found a bible that caught my eye.  It's called The Green Bible I never really thought of HIM as an environmentalist, but if you really think about it HE was the ultimate "Green"  man!  I mean HE made everything and was very conscientious about making it right for his people.  I have been trying for many years to understand HIS purpose for me and where I am headed.  With this blog I have found something I am very passionate about, it certainly didn't start off that way.  The more I used the products for my son the more I realized that there was more to the "green" movement.
I started seeing things in stores pop out at me that were "Green", it was wonderful and enlightening.  You can go through all of my posts here and see the road traveled on this journey and where I would like to be after we "Boot Our Debt".   Most that know me would say I hardly ever talk about GOD (just because I don't talk about him doesn't mean I don't believe), and am not by any means a bible thumper.  But I believe this Bible jumped out at me for a great reason, and the reason was for me to understand HIM through my writings of this blog and the readings we have through our church.  I really hadn't thought of HIM in the "green" way, but HE created everything we see and take for granted everyday.  I believe this is my way to get a closer look of our creator, and understand him as the "Ultimate Green Man".  Upon purchasing this Bible I have started slowly looking through it and there are some very profound words from many people, one that popped out at me is from the late Louis Armstrong's great song "What A Wonderful World".  "I see skies of blue and clouds of white.  The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night. And I think to myself, what a wonderful world."  These words and songs were used recently by our Priest in a sermon I loved them then and love them now.  These words popped out from a section in the preface named "Teachings on Creation through the Ages".  I also love Louis Armstrong he was one of the best Jazz trumpeters of all time, and is my favorite next Dizzy Gilespie it must be because of playing the trumpet myself, and loving how both of them could make trumpets "talk".

Learning about GOD through this bible will be a new jouney to self discovery and continuing to be as green as possible not only for my son but for the great earth that GOD our Father created for all man kind, all races, nationallities, and religions. Taking things for granted is a very bad habit for many people in this world, me included.  I know I should not do this but it's socioties back drop at times and most follow socioty in some way or another knowing it or not!  If you have not heard of this bible check it out it may be what you are looking for or what HE wants you to know!

A New Magazine

It may not be for some of you but a couple of months back I ran across Urban Farm in our local TSC store.  I bought a copy and have fell in love with it.  I have bought my second issue and am going to try one of the articles on building your own self watering containers for container gardening.  The other magazine I have been reading lately is Mother Earth News, I know this is not a new publication my parents read it when I was a kid so I remember them being around the house but never knowing fully what they were all about.  Now I really wish I would have LOL!  I am noticing more and more publications like this and I love it to tell you the truth.

On another note tho I was quite please when going out of town on day (to come into the big town as I call it) just out side of our little town a family has installed a new wind turbine 2 thumbs up to that family.  I wish more families in our rural area would do it.  I wish I had the money to install one and at least have a portion of my electricity wind powered.   We have had our ups and downs with those issues lately tho, our A/C is out and we are working through a possibility of things that it could be that are not even related to the A/C itself.  If those are not the cause then we are calling in the repair man, but if we can fix it without the repair bill then that is our best case scenario.

I have purchased the necessary items to fix our downspouts to drain like they should, instead of half the time and fall apart with every hard rain we have.  I have to take a couple of the parts back tho they are too big for the tubing we already have.  No biggy at all my start to having rain barrels is coming together slowly but surely.  Well I guess that is my update for now have a great earthy day!

Busy Week

This week has been a busy week for me, and Holy week was just a little dot of it.  I have been so busy with things that I pretty much forgot about it being Holy week all together.  I was so busy in fact that I forgot what all happen on Monday.  Tuesday we spent pretty much all day fixing the front brakes on our car, I did however get a few things done before leaving on a bus trip with our track team.  Wednesday was no better was not going to take a baseball trip but, no one else was available to run them so I took it missing Praise team rehearsal, but not before I was able to utilize mother nature and got 7 loads of laundry done only using the dryer twice. Yesterday was another very busy day, since it was also payday we had those errands to run, since I missed practice on Wednesday night I went and practiced (I will be playing the trumpet for services along with the guitar). After about an hour or so a very tired lip we were off to check on something Hubby wanted and eat lunch.  Then we got home rested for a bit and I was off on another track trip.  Getting home a little after 9:30pm (well back in the lot), I was home and finally crashing by 10:30 after kid retrieval from Gma's and Gpa's.  Today we are supposed to be getting storms so laundry outside will just not happen, to bad to was wanting to get a few more loads on the line keeping that carbon footprint down for today.  Our oldest has a ecosystem shoe box project to finish for school so we will probably run in and pick up a few things for that to get it started.  A weekend filled with Easter happenings will round out our week.  I wish you all a very Happy and Safe Easter weekend hope the bunny treats you well but please remember the real reason for this wonderful season.  That "HE" died on the cross for you!

Houston The Seeds.........

Are planted, we started our seed boxes yesterday for our "garden".  I say it that way because it's going to be mostly planted in planters on the deck.  I did plant them with all organic starting mix and got as many packets of organic as I could, choices were somewhat limited.  We have not started with the ground yet but we are getting ready to till it up and get it ready for planting.  We do hope to get some of the stuff in the ground, but if I only end up with a deck garden it will be well worth it.  I will have fresh vegetables any way I can get them.  I hope to freeze peas and such for the winter, saving us some money in the winter.  When they progress I will post updates  along with some pictures.

Earthworks Trip

My 3rd grader got the chance to be a earth scientist last Friday, when he attended a day at the Earthworks facility in Kansas City, Missouri.
"EarthWorks - Kansas City’s Premier Experiential Science Learning Program, Student Grades 3-5

EarthWorks is a laboratory that comes to life when young people take on the role of scientists who work to determine the health of a habitat. Scientific teams collaborate to determine whether a habitat can continue to sustain life."
As some of you know I am a bus driver for my son's school and took this trip last year while he was a 2nd grader, they get the trip as a 3rd grader.  My youngest son got the chance to go and just if you will "run a muck"  he ha a blast in all the habitats to tell you the truth so did I LOL!  But for the tables to be turned and the oldest to actually have a "job" as they call it in his habitat was something different.  I was not able to follow him nor did I really want to because I had seen it before.  But the thought of it being a place that taught the significance of sustainable living through how different habitants live and sustain is great.  He loved the place and all that it was about, they even had a challenge of how much recycling and compost they would have after lunch.  It was quite interesting  that the kids, parents, teachers and bus drivers only had 2lbs of recyclable materials and 4lbs of compost materials for the center, but that is not bad they were told to make their lunches as "eco-friendly and sustainable" as possible.  I thought the did quite well and was very proud of our kids.  There were 3 schools there at the time and they all have to work together as one unit.  If you live in the Kansas City area and have a school that does not do this I highly suggest it that you ask about taking a 3-5 grade to experience it first hand.  Earthworks and Exchange City KCMO check it out.
Have a great look around and maybe if you are not in the KCMO area your area has something similar or a Earthworks in your metropolitan area.

My entry way!

Well we had to break down and tear out our entry way, before someone fell through to the basement.  I did get my Bamboo that I wanted the color is great its "Island Cherry".  We did have to buy a 2x8 and some plywood to replace damaged boards (I know not green) I had no choice with these, but our new insulation for the under part is made from recycled materials and is certified recyclable also.  I was very stern about this purchase being as "green" as we could get it.  So one of my projects that I wanted done is getting done faster than I figured it would, I feel better about it being done and then no one will get hurt.  While we are doing this we are weather proofing where ants and mice have invaded so that will be another green step by helping our energy savings so its not going out under the door.

Cribs on CMT

I was watching Cribs today on CMT, they had Eric Church and his lovely wife on.  I was very surprised when they were talking about the remodel they did on the house.  They saved all the cabinets and refurbished them to be more eco-savvy and budget friendly.  WTG!  Its so nice to see famous people and their families thinking about budgets and eco-friendly things.  Makes me feel very good and  I wish more celebs's' had their way of thinking.  If you don't know Eric is a country singer fairly new to the business, he even showed off his truck not all polished up and shiny.  I thought that was awesome to see a star in his natural state so to speak, he even stated that he see's all of these shiny cars/trucks on Cribs but never the true car/truck that is used for everyday workings.  Kudos to Eric for being s down to earth country star its nice for a blue collar worker and family woman like myself seeing you being that way too!
